The Lake Tahoe Scenic Byway is often noted as "The Most Beautiful Drive In America" and it's easy to see why. This 28-mile stretch of highway is downright jaw-dropping and it makes for an awesome adventure no matter what time of year it is. However, fall might just be the best time to set off on this road trip and here's why.
Lake Tahoe is widely lauded as one of Nevada's greatest sights and we couldn't agree more. There's something about this majestic alpine lake that never fails to please. It may be regarded as mainly a summer or winter destination, but fall is a spectacular time to explore it as well. In fact, fall at Lake Tahoe can't be beat!
The byway takes you all along the length of the lake on Nevada's side. You can start at either the north or south shore of the lake. It's totally up to you. All in all, the byway can take less than two hours to go to the end and back, but you'll definitely want to plan some extra time to step out of the car and take advantage of the fall splendor.
A popular place to start this trek is at the border town of Stateline. As you drive through the touristy town of Zephyr Cove, you'll be treated to grand views of America's largest alpine lake. There's no mistaking the glistening of Tahoe's waters, even through dense thickets of pine trees.
From here, U.S. 50 will lead you east through the magnificent landmark known as Cave Rock. It's only a matter of time before the fall colors show themselves so keep your eyes peeled!
The byway changes highways from U.S. 50 to State Route 28 near Spooner Lake. Here you will venture away from Tahoe's shoreline. However, the region around Spooner Lake is definitely worth checking out. During fall, there appears to be a delightful golden glow over the lake.
After Spooner Lake, the byway ventures back and hugs Tahoe's shores once again. As you approach Sand Harbor, radiant spots of deciduous trees stand in contrast to the dense patches of pine trees. Bright shades of yellow and orange catch your eye within the lake's scenery.
After Sand Harbor, you'll drive past the Mt. Rose region and arrive at Incline Village. Along the way, stunning displays of fall foliage are bound to make an impression on you.
