Cemeteries are supposed to be quiet, peaceful places where people go to remember loved ones who have passed away, but that’s not always the case. People who visit Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier often report some strange, unsettling activity that’s anything but peaceful.
Green Mount Cemetery was established in 1854. It's a seemingly peaceful cemetery that covers 35 acres in Montpelier.
The address of the cemetery is 250 State St., Montpelier, VT 05602.
Most people find Green Mount to be a peaceful, serene place...unless they've seen or heard some unsettling things.
This place is said to be haunted by a number of different spirits. Some visitors report seeing orbs floating over the headstones.
Joggers through the cemetery claim to hear footsteps approaching behind them...but when they turn around, no one is there.
Others report a general feeling of unease during their visit, as though they're being watched.
Those who linger here as dusk approaches say that they sometimes hear low voices murmuring nearby.
There are also reports of glowing red eyes peeking up over headstones, and screams that echo throughout the cemetery.
Some of the paranormal activity here may be connected to a local philanthropist who was buried here in 1899.
John E. Hubbard was a businessman who had accumulated a fair amount of wealth before he came into a large inheritance. When his aunt died, she had left most of her estate to the city, bequeathing a large amount of money to be spent on a library.
John contested the will and won. He still built the library, but invested considerably less money than his aunt intended. Townspeople considered him stingy. Before his death, John commissioned an artist to create a bronze statue for his grave.
Though it actually depicts a man with a cape draped around himself, the large statue on the grave is now known as Black Agnes.
The title of the statue is "Thanatos," which means "Death" in Greek. It's said that if you sit on the lap of Black Agnes, you might experience a range of horrible things, from a spurt of bad luck to death.
It's assumed that Hubbard's mean-spirited personality while he was alive has somehow carried over after his death, and is responsible for many of the strange happenings here.
