There are a lot of informational places around Kansas where you can truly learn about every era we’ve been through. Over the years, museums have popped up just about everywhere, each telling its own story about a person, place, or event. Luckily for us, this means that more information is accessible to us each year. Here are a few little-known museums around Kansas that have free admission for your convenience. It’s a labor of love!
1. Anderson County Historical Society Museum - 410 W. 6th Ave., Garnett, KS
This amazing museum was started in 1968, when a room inside the courthouse was designated as a museum for the society. Today, it now lives in an old school building, the perfect place to house a museum with so much to show. All sorts of antique items from eras long gone are arranged in each room, almost feeling like an entire antique store has opened up around you. Immersing yourself in all of these old pieces of history is an experience anyone would love.
2. Baxter Springs Heritage Museum - 740 East Ave., Baxter Springs, KS
This beautiful building holds years and years of Baxter Springs history within its walls. Everything from the Osage Indians to the Civil War and Lead/Zinc Mining era is covered here, so make sure you've got plenty of time to soak it all in.
3. Crispin's Drug Store Museum - 161 East Lincoln Ave., Lincoln, KS
Crispin's Drug Store is a recreation of an 1880-1920 era drugstore, complete with all sorts of tonics, cure-alls, and salves. Some of the bottles still hold their original contents, preserved here in this replica store for the rest of their days. Even though it's only one room, there's so much to see here that you could easily spend an hour or two just looking around and chatting with the owner.
4. Eudora Community Museum - 720 Main St., Eudora, KS
If you've ever wanted to know a small town from the inside out, a local history museum is a great place to start. Everything from old sports to the founding of the town are here, so don't forget your glasses at home. You're in for an adventure.
5. Geary County Historical Society - 530 N. Adams, Junction City, KS
The motto here at this museum is "Preserving the past for the future" and they aim to do just that. Each building attached to the museum is kept in top condition to ensure it survives as long as possible, and each room of the museum holds so many lives' worth of treasures. Countless vintage photographs can be seen here as well. There's just no end to what they've kept over the years.
6. Greyhound Hall of Fame - 407 S. Buckeye, Abilene, KS
It's a museum dedicated to man's best friend, but also to all of the amazing, incredibly fast racing dogs that made history over the years. It describes the origin of the breed as well as current examples. However, the best current example are the two live-in retired racing greyhounds that are only after your heart.
7. Smoky Hill Museum - 211 W. Iron Ave., Salina, KS
This museum in Salina is all about teaching about the Smoky Hill area and Salina itself. The collection began in 1879 but eventually grew to create an entire museum's worth of knowledge, history, and life experiences.
