You could spend a lifetime hiking Colorado’s trails and still not see them all. Of course, not all trails are suitable for all hikers – here’s a trail that takes you high up into the Sangre De Cristo mountains to a hidden lake. This trail difficult, and because of its steep, treacherous terrain, many Coloradans will never see this pretty lake.
The Willow Trail is a rigorous, 12-mile out-and-back trail. You'll find the trailhead at Crater Lake in the Rio Grande National Forest.
Before you start out on this trail, make sure that you're fully prepared for the challenges it presents. Check the weather and carry plenty of water, adequate clothing for the conditions, and some snacks to keep you going.
The scenery definitely rewards the adventurous hikers who take on this steep, rocky trail. You'll be surrounded by fragrant pines and see some of the most stunning natural beauty Colorado has to offer in this wilderness.
You'll want to stop occasionally to catch your breath, but that just gives you plenty of time for some photography. Bring along a camera or have your cell phone charged so you can snap some pics of the magnificent mountains here.
You'll travel alongside some creeks and the water level ranges from a tiny trickle to a roaring rush of water, depending on the time of year. When the water is really flowing, this waterfall is a real stunner.
Willow Trail has a total elevation change of nearly 3,000 feet along the way. It may take you as long as five hours to reach the top and another two or three hours to get back down. Many people choose to backpack in and stay for a day or two before returning home.
Willow Lake is an azure gem tucked into the valley of these tall mountains. Take a break at the lake, and admire its beauty. Many Coloradans aren't able to hike to this lake and will never see it!
Note: Recent hikers have noted that you may encounter bears near Willow Lake. If you're backpacking, make sure to bring bear-proof containers and keep a clean campsite!
