When it comes to seeking out gorgeous fall colors, Northern California’s Sierra Nevadas should be your go-to place. However, these beautiful fall colors can quickly fade as winter tends to arrive in the Sierras fairly quickly after the leaves begin to change. Definitely don't sleep on going out and exploring our state's magnificent fall foliage. Although the majority of our region won't see peak fall foliage until late October, the fall colors are known to leave quickly. This means you'll want to plan an outing ASAP if you want to see the Sierra Nevadas at their best.
There are several short and sweet trails throughout the Sierras which are perfect for a family day trip. You definitely don't have to be an expert hiker in order to experience the beauty of this epic mountain range. One of our favorite fall hikes is the Manazanita Lake Loop Trail in Lassen Volcanic National Park and you'll soon understand why.
The trail is rated as easy and is just underneath two miles in length. This makes it an ideal choice for families, especially ones with young kids. The easy-breezy trail leads you gently around Manzanita Lake, boasting fantastic views from start to finish.
The trail is well-shaded by Jeffrey pines and lush willows. During the fall, many of the trees take on the most delightful fall colors, creating a picture perfect scene that seems almost too beautiful to be real. Leaves are strewn all around and you'll feel as if you've stepped into an autumn wonderland.
You'll find yourself completely surrounded by beauty from all sides. On one side, the shoreline offers wonderful views of Manzanita Lake and Lassen Peak looming in the background. On the other side, the forest offers great birdwatching and wildlife viewing opportunities.
The mountain air is nice and crisp during the fall, which makes for a rejuvenating adventure. Manzanita Lake typically remains unfrozen through late fall, so you'll be able to enjoy wonderful lake views as late as possible. There's a reason this lake is one of the most photographed in the Sierras and you'll understand why once you see it with your own eyes.
