There is a very little known campground hidden among a patch of hills in North Dakota. In fact, it’s so hidden, you’ll likely have the place entirely to yourself! If you need a spot to escape the hustle and bustle of your daily life and just relax in the peace and quiet of nature, this is it. It’s a bit off the beaten path but well worth the journey! Take a look:
Located in the very far south east corner of North Dakota, the Hankinson Hills Campground is located in a beautiful, unique area. It is near the small town of Hankinson, which has a few great restaurants and a one-of-a-kind antique store.
The campground and recreation area are part of the Sheyenne National Grassland. This grassland is known for its "sandy hills," windblown and shaped overtime with prairie grass growing on top.
There are 15 campsites available, tucked up among the tree groves with everything you need for a great experience. There are two campsite areas, one designated for people who bring horses with them and the other for those without. All of them have picnic tables and fire rings for that classic sleeping under the stars experience.
Even if you don't plan on staying the night, you can still enjoy Hankinson Hills by hitting the trails. There are about 8 miles of trails that traverse the stunning landscape. You'll crest hills, go down among the trees, and you might even come across some cows grazing.
When fall comes around, Hankinson Hills becomes even more charming as the wooded areas provide a colorful backdrop to your quiet getaway. You'll find nothing but peace and serenity while you stay out here, and you'll love it.
