I love New Jersey’s state parks…. So does everyone else. Sometimes this means they can get a little crowded. If you’re looking for a stunning outdoor experience and true serenity, consider a membership at Greenbrook Sanctuary. This private nature sanctuary is located within Palisades Interstate Park and a membership is just $40 per year for an individual or $60 for a family membership. That very reasonable price also comes with some pretty sweet benefits.
Within the stunning 165-acre park, you'll find streams, a pond, adjoining bog, a wide variety of wildlife, Hudson River views, forest, swampland, over a dozen different trails and a hidden waterfall.
Managed by the non-profit Palisades Nature Association, the park is easily accessible off U.S. Route 9W, 4.7 miles north of the George Washington Bridge. A full-time naturalist is on duty at the sanctuary to conduct programs, answer questions, and report wildlife sightings.
Benefits of membership are abundant. Facilities include 6 miles of marked trails, an information center and museum, restrooms and a picnic area. Booklets about the sanctuary’s flora, fauna, ecology, history, and trails are available in the information center. Members will also enjoy weekend nature programs and occasional weekday morning and evening walks, conducted by a professional naturalist.
Upcoming events include the Hudson River Barn Dance featuring live music on September 30th and Hawks on the Hudson on October 7th. Enjoy live raptor presentations and more.
These spectacular photos, many by Ken Habermann, just scratch the surface when it comes to the beauty of this preserve. You’ll absolutely want to check it out for yourself. The gorgeous sanctuary is located just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Bergen and Hudson counties and is also easily accessible by bus from New York City. It is the perfect place to find solitude, and with your membership card, car decal and own set of keys, you’re sure to feel like a VIP. To learn more, visit NJPalisades.org/Greenbrook. You are also welcome to check out their free open house this Sunday (9/30) from 12-3.
