South Carolina is home to many haunted places and choosing just one town to feature here is a difficult task. To that end, we’re featuring a notoriously haunted island with much to love and admire, in addition to the many ghost tales that surround this gorgeous place.
The picturesque views, friendly residents and rich Gullah history of the community on this inland island are among the things people love most. But there are some super haunted places found among the naturally beautiful landscape on St. Helena Island, as well as some pretty cool things completely unrelated to ghosts, too! Take a look:

Found along Lands End Road, the Chapel of Ease is among the most haunted of locations in the Lowcountry. Visitors here have reported everything from seeing apparitions to hearing church bells — and that doesn't even begin to tell all the haunts reported in the adjoining very old cemetery.

Constructed in 1899, this fort was an active military installation for only a few years. But in that time there were fights and deaths among those soldiers stationed here. One of them, now called 'the headless soldier,' haunts this public park on the regular. You can learn more about the park and the ghost in this article.

There is a legendary disappearing light along Lands End Road that has been the center of much local lore in the community. Locals (and visitors) report seeing this light as they approach a certain tree along the highway. Then, as they draw nearer, the light disappears. Some believe it's the ghost of the headless soldier walking along the road with a lantern... looking for his missing head.

St Helena Island and her residents are, unfortunately, not strangers to extreme tragedies. The Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893 killed hundreds of residents, and the devastating effects turned this island into one of the poorest communities in the state for many decades after.
This longtime favorite Lowcountry dish, a mashup of vegetables, sausage and seafood, gets its name from the
St. Helena community of Frogmore where it was first created.

Most people who didn't follow American Idol in 2013 aren't aware that South Carolina had a very talented contestant in the running. Candace Glover, from St. Helena Island, nailed it each and every week to win the entire season.
It's said that Dr. Martin Luther King penned the early words of this famous speech during a visit to the historic Penn Center on St Helena Island.
