When one thinks of gold mines, Maryland isn’t usually the first place that comes to mind. However, you’ll be surprised to learn that there are gold mine ruins hiding right here in the Old Line State. The following trail will lead you right to them and it’s a fascinating piece of history to see in person.

You probably know about Great Falls, which is a beautiful area of the Potomac River sandwiched between Maryland and Virginia.

While the most popular hike here is Billy Goat Trail, there's another area trek that's worth exploring...

The Gold Mine Loop is a lesser known hike that's 3.2 miles in length. It takes approximately one hour to complete.

...this route is also home to gold mine ruins.

According to canaltrust.org, a Civil War Union soldier discovered gold here while stationed in the area. He later returned, purchased land, and began mining.

You can still see what's left of the old mines, which continue to crumble away day by day. It's a fascinating spot to explore year-round.
