It should be no surprise that one of the most amazing bridges in North Dakota is in Valley City, also known as the "City of Bridges."
While there are over 10 historical and beautiful bridges in Valley City, there is certainly one that stands above the rest - literally. This bridge can be seen spanning across the edge of the entire town, high above the ground.
That particular bridge is the Hi-Line Railroad bridge. From one edge to the other, the bridge is 3,860 feet long. Pictures don't get the same effect across as viewing it in person - it is truly impressive to behold.
The Hi-Line Bridge spans over the Sheyenne River at 162 feet high. It is both one of the longest and highest viaducts in the entire country, and at the time it was built, the entire world.
This bridge is over one hundred years old. Building was completed in 1908 by the Northern Pacific Railroad, the year the photograph below was taken, and it is still considered an engineering feat today. It is an official Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
It has been a highly important bridge through all the decades of its existence and is still in use today. During both World Wars, it was guarded day and night by soldiers as the railroad was vital in moving freight coast to coast. Now it still has BNSF freight trains crossing it daily.
Today, you can see the Hi-Line Bridge by simply visiting Valley City. One of the best views of it you can get - especially in the fall - is at the Chautauqua Park where you can have a riverside stroll or picnic and watch the trains roll by this remarkable piece of history and beauty.
