Everyone needs a change of scenery (and pace) sometimes, and when you live in the best state in the country, you don’t have to go far to get it. Take a trip to one of these charming and relaxing towns on your next available weekend and you’ll see what we mean.
1. Hamilton
The fall foliage around the Daly Mansion is incredible, but Hamilton is a great place to visit any time of year. Eat a delicious burger at Nap's Grill and shop the Hamilton Farmers Market.
2. West Yellowstone
This town happens to be a gateway to one of our most beautiful national parks, but it also makes a great destination itself. The seasonal Playmill Theatre has been a local icon since 1964, and the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is incredible. The fact that you'll be surrounded by natural beauty doesn't hurt.
3. Fort Benton
Fort Benton is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, and you can't help but feel like a history buff when you visit. From the Grand Union Hotel (which is older than the state of Montana itself) to the heartwarming Shep Memorial, this little city will steal your heart.
4. Big Timber
Big Timber is also packed with history, and it's also full of good old-fashioned small town charm. Don't miss the Crazy Mountain Museum or the delicious food at the Thirsty Turtle Tavern & Grill.
5. Havre
Although it's best to avoid visiting Havre in the winter (it's been ranked the Number 1 worst winter city in America), this railroad city is otherwise pretty great. Take a tour of Fort Assinniboine, check out Havre Beneath the Streets, and have an Ugly Burger at Rod's Drive-Inn and you'll see why its residents have so much pride.
6. Anaconda
It may be only 24 miles from Butte, but Anaconda has its own unique vibe, and it's highly underrated. Check out the historic Washoe Theater on Main Street, the Dumas Brothel Museum, and teat yourself to some Wind's Pasties.
7. Dillon
Southwest Montana is exceptionally stunning, and Dillon is a criminally overlooked city. It sits in a sweeping valley into which the Beaverhead, Big Hole and Ruby Rivers drain, and the Pioneer Mountain Wilderness Area is amazing.
One of the best things about Montana life is exploring all its charming small towns. These spots are perfect for weekend getaways.
