Sand Bar State Park is a tiny 15-acre gem on the shores of Lake Champlain. Its name is derived from the underwater natural sandbar between South Hero Island in Grand Isle County and the town of Milton on the Vermont mainland. The park itself is located on the mainland.

Over tens of thousands of years, the Lamoille River washed sediment down into the lake creating the sandbar. Without the river deposits, the depth of the water here would be over 150 feet. Now that the sandbar has been created over time, the lake's water is only a few feet deep at the top of the sandbar to South Hero. Before the first bridge was built in 1850, this sandbar was the crossing from the mainland to the islands.

Today, the sandbar creates a shallow area perfect for cooling down on sweltering hot days. Adults and kids alike love the warmer shallows where you can splash, wade, and float all day long.
