Over time, we’ve spilled the beans on quite a few unique places to spend the night in North Carolina. From a castle to a yurt and in a treehouse or in a vineyard treehouse, the Tar Heel State doles out a variety of fun and unique places to create lasting memories. We absolutely love finding unique places to stay and we have to say our bucket list is growing quite a bit. A trend that is steeped in a historical past is making a comeback and we couldn’t be happier. Teepee camping in North Carolina is in full swing and no one quite does it as well as Blue Bear Mountain Camp. Check out these incredible structures!
Have you ever gone tepee camping in North Carolina? Would you be intrigued by the glamping experience of sleeping inside a 15-foot tepee on top of a mountain? Yes please, our hands are enthusiastically raised.
What if the tepee came with a cozy queen-sized bed with luxury linens and the glow of the natural morning light creating a circular work of art all around and over your head as you awaken? Can you think of a better way to wake up?
You'll find tepee camping (and more!) at Blue Bear Mountain in Todd, North Carolina, just a short drive north of Boone. The mountaintop retreat is most unique for having created a variety of camping experiences embedded into the surrounding natural landscape. You'd never know it, but there's an entire campground with cabins, pads for campers... and yes, tepee camping, all found on top of the mountain. With such a beautiful area you will be surrounded by mountains all around you immersing yourself in a stunning natural setting.
And while tepee camping (it's probably more akin to glamping than camping... ) isn't for everyone, it's a perfect getaway to bring the kids... or, not. (If the kids are along, you can request portable cots for your tepee.) These tepees have such versatility, everything from a family weekend retreat to a romantic getaway.
The camp includes a bathhouse with private showers, a small camp stove, fire rings, grills for cooking, and miles of trails for exploring the surrounding woods. This truly is a luxurious glamping experience. In fact, we are willing to bet that these tepees could melt the hardest of hearts when it comes to people who say they don't like camping.
During the day, you can also get out and explore the surrounding area. Boone, and the famous Blue Ridge Parkway, are a mere 10 miles to the south. Elk Knob State Park and Todd Winery are a stone's throw away, and the much-visited Linville Gorge Wilderness Area is approximately 30 miles away. The location of this campground certainly has plenty to do within the surrounding area.
If tepee glamping is a little too outside your range of comfort, then Blue Bear Mountain also has leveled camper pads, complete with 50A and 30A hookups and even an on-site dump station. The campground also offers cozy cabins and stargazing domes for another unique camping experience. So whether from your camper, your own tent — or from a tepee, you're bound to love the fresh air and jaw dropping views from high atop this mountain perch!
