Hopefully, your summer has been filled with outdoor adventures in our beautiful state of Kentucky, and that you to have more planned for the upcoming change in seasons. Our lakes, rivers, and creeks are ideal for exploring in the summer when the weather is hot, and we have one more spot in Kentucky that is perfect for a last summer adventure. Hidden off of picturesque Grayson Lake is a beautiful grotto that may not be easy to reach, but seeking it out is so worth the effort.
Grayson Lake is located between Lexington and the West Virginia border, in a naturally stunning area of Kentucky. There is so much outdoor adventure to experience here and a favorite is to paddle through the unique landscape of Grayson Lake.
You can visit the lake yourself with a canoe, kayak, or stand up paddle board, but we highly suggest checking it out with SUP Kentucky. They host many adventures around the state and are the best tour guides, even for those who have never experienced a paddle board.
They offer many excursions on Grayson Lake throughout the year, including a visit to the hidden grotto. The lake is surrounded by walls of sandstone, which you'll get to see very up close on this portion of the trip.
You'll have plenty of time to adjust to your board and learn how to use it before heading into a narrow cave-like area to reach the grotto. The scenery is really unlike any other water tour in Kentucky.
You'll be led past the rock formations and overhangs to a spot that is the best definition of a hidden gem. The grotto can really only be reached this way by paddle board or kayak. The park does have incredible hiking trails and some have ventured to the grotto by foot, but it's not easy. Plus the views from the water are much better anyway.
This hidden grotto is arguably one of the most beautiful places in Kentucky, and definitely one of the most relaxing.
