In Underhill, Vermont there is a yellow farmhouse that is not only a home but also a bakery where the world’s best pies are baked daily. These pies are sold by the old-fashioned honor system from a shed in the backyard. If you have a soft spot for pie of any kind then put this charming spot on your radar immediately, because once you’ve sampled a Poorhouse Pie, nothing else will do.
Located on Park Street in Underhill, Poorhouse Pies can be found easily with the signs out front that entice you with the mouthwatering promise of pie.
Jamie and Paula Eisenberg began the bakery in 2009 out of their Vermont farmhouse. They turned the living room into a commercial kitchen and began tempting the neighbors with delicious freshly baked pies.
The pies are so scrumptious that sales quickly took off allowing the owners to quit their day jobs and bake full time. From fruit pies to cream pies, each bite is deliciously perfect.
During the warmer months, you can grab a pie from the self-serve pie shack. The baked treasures are stored in two refrigerators which keep them from spoiling. Payment in the form of cash or check can be placed in the lock box inside the door.
Find the treats in an insulated pie box during the colder months. Again the honor system is in place, because the bakers would rather be baking than manning a cash register.
Whether you are giving into a craving or looking for a fabulous dessert for a dinner party, Poorhouse Pies has just what you need.
Vermonter's love the Maple Pecan Pie. For true pie fanatics you'll find flavors like blueberry-peach, chocolate cream, cherry, key lime, and of course traditional apple.
A light flaky crust and succulent sweet center filled with fresh ingredients makes these baked-with-love desserts, the world's best pies.
And if the pies weren't enough, on Sundays of holiday weekends they have donuts. This labor of love wakes the chefs up in the middle of the night to hand create over 800 donuts in many yummy flavors.
Come early because the line is long and these breakfast treats fly off the table like hotcakes. Donut sales start at 8 a.m. and they usually sell out by 9:30 a.m.
To find the world's best pies, just visit the self-serve stand in Underhill, and if you see the light on in the bakeshop feel free to knock on the door and say hi.
