As the years go on, we can’t help but notice that more and more of our neighbors in New York are people who have transplanted here from other areas of the country – and we don’t blame them! If you ask any of us, there are so many reasons to gush over the Empire State. If you’re someone who’s only visited here and have long wondered if New York is the right place for you, then take a look at this list to determine whether or not you were always meant to be a New Yorker.
1. You know that the best wings in the country only exist here in New York.
Other states may try and recreate our delicious wings, but regardless of what people say - the only delicious wings exist here in New York - specifically Buffalo. Whether you're obsessed with Anchor Bar or choose to dine at other spots like Duff's Famous Wings, you can't go wrong with eating wings anywhere in the Queen City.
2. And you also know that pizza just tastes wrong when you're eating it in any place outside of New York.
Some people may think that New York City is the only place that you can find real pizza, but if you take the time to explore the rest of our state you'll see that all of New York knows how to cook up the perfect pie. Sadly, if you've never called New York home or visited here, there's no point in saying that you've ever had real pizza.
3. The mountains are always calling your name.
From the Adirondacks to the Catskills, there are so many mountains to climb and explore in New York. One of the many things you'll deal with as a New Yorker, aside from high taxes, is the fact that the mountains will always be calling your name!
4. You're ready to live the lake life.
One of the best things about living in New York is that you're always near the water, whether it be a lake, the ocean, rivers, or small ponds and creeks. Growing up in New York, for many of us, means that our summers are spent in cabins along our lakefronts, where we get to enjoy this beautiful home of ours with friends and family. Is there anything better than this?
5. You're prepared to experience a real winter.
Winter is a season that varies in definition throughout our country, while some may say they've experienced it - most have not. Come out to New York and visit our Central and Western Regions and you'll get to feel what a real winter is like - especially once you experience your first lake effect storm for yourself. Get ready to bundle up New Yorkers!
6. You've waited all your life to go chasing after waterfalls.
Most people associate New York waterfalls with the popular Niagara Falls - but there are so many more natural wonders to explore than just that well-known one. In every region of New York you can find stunning waterfalls, so if you've been on a lifelong mission to check hundreds of them off of your bucket list - there's no better place to start your adventure then here in New York.
7. You're ready to experience the best of both city life and country living.
Only in New York can you be relaxing on a peaceful farm and then within a couple hours be wandering through the adrenaline-filled streets of our biggest cities. If you've had a hard time figuring out if you're meant to live out in the country or sleep among skyscrapers, there's no better state than New York to experience both of these worlds.
8. You want your kids to experience unforgettable, adventure-filled field trips.
In some states, children may dread the day when it's time to take another field trip to a boring destination - but that's not the case here in New York! Depending on where you live, you'll get to take exciting field trips to places like the underground world of Howe Caverns, amazing Bronx Zoo, or perhaps you'll even travel out of the country and head up north to see our friends in Canada!
9. You're willing and excited to try new things.
If you want to live your New York life to the fullest, you'll have to leave your fear and judgments at the state border before you cross over in our home and settle on in. To enjoy all that our state has to offer, you can't be afraid to try new things! Instead of running in fear and turning your nose away at things you've never heard of like our savory Garbage Plates, give this dish a taste and see why our longtime New Yorkers can't stop eating these foods.
10. You enjoy a good and healthy rivalry.
If you haven't lived in New York, you might be used to your state rivalries involving teams from other states. But here in New York? We keep the fun within state lines. Whether it's the Yankees versus the Mets or the Buffalo Bills vs the Giants and Jets, there's always a rivalry to take part in here in the Empire State.
11. You're not sure where Upstate New York is either.
Speaking of debates, one of the greatest longstanding debates that have been occurring in our state is over the fact that no one seems to quite know where Upstate New York starts and ends. Some people may consider Upstate to be Ulster County or even more strangely you might hear people refer to areas around Rochester as Upstate, while many can agree anything above Albany is considered to be part of this region. So, if you aren't sure where Upstate New York is either, you'll fit right in here.
