Did you know you can take a canal boat ride in northwest Ohio? Most people don’t. There’s a small town called Grand Rapids and it beautifully preserves its history through architecture, canal rides and unique festivals. It’s one of the few places in the state where you can truly travel back in time for the day. Take a look:

Along the southern bank of the Maumee River, just southwest of Toledo, you’ll find a restored canal town that’s truly one of a kind.

You'll find antiques, gifts and collectibles galore inside the numerous restored canal buildings, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The canal is probably the most unique and beautiful feature about Grand Rapids. You can see the canal towpath from the village park.

With a population of about 986, Grand Rapids is a quaint place to live and the perfect place to visit for a day trip.

Providence Metropark features original canal locks, as well as the historic Isaac Ludwig Mill and Interpretive Center (pictured), which is a canal-era sawmill and grist mill.

You'll find the park at 13801 S River Rd., Grand Rapids, OH 43522.
At the park, you can even ride on a canal boat pulled by mules down the restored Miami & Erie Canal. It's a truly special experience.

The one-hour boat rides include a narration by living history interpreters. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for children ages 3 - 12. Children 2 and under are free.
Please note: The Historic Canal Experience is open from May - October. Groups of 10 or more are required to call 419-407-9700 for reservations.
