Idaho is loaded with stunning hikes that boast some of the finest views of our state. However, there is only one trail that boasts jaw-dropping views not just of Idaho, but four states in total. How amazing is that? The hike to Heaven’s Gate is actually very manageable, although you’ll definitely need a sturdy vehicle to reach the trailhead. This trail is way out in the backcountry but you’ll be so glad you made the effort once you reach the hike’s peak. View Idaho, Washington, Oregon, AND Montana all at once when you complete this epic trail!
If there's one hike that belongs on your bucket list, it's this one. The Heaven's Gate hiking trail is located way out in the Idaho backcountry and it's pure bliss. Not only does the trail boast epic views of Idaho's landscape but three other states as well. This is definitely something you'll want to see.
The hike up to the vista point is surprisingly short and sweet. It's getting to the trailhead that can be difficult. To reach the lookout, you'll travel 17 miles on a steep and rough gravel road,. Keep in mind that your vehicle must be able to manage tough conditions.
To get to the trailhead: Travel south on Highway 95 from Riggins, Idaho. You'll reach Seven Devils Road after 1.3 miles and turn right. You'll then drive for approximately 17 miles on a steep and narrow road until you reach the end. This is where you'll find the gate to the Heaven's Gate Trailhead.
The trail itself is nice and short. It ultimately leads you to a fire lookout tower which acts as the vista point. You can still see the effects of a wildfire that occurred in the area back in 2008 but the landscape is still incredibly beautiful, especially with the arrival of wildflowers on the surrounding hillsides.
Prepare to be blown away once you reach the lookout. It sits at the entrance to the Seven Devils Mountains and at a whopping 8,429 feet above sea level, the view is simply extraordinary.
From here, you'll be subject to a once-in-a-lifetime view of the deepest canyon in North America—Hells Canyon. With canyon drops of over 7,000 feet, this is definitely a view you won't soon forget. In fact, the vantage point is so high up that the canyon floor is barely visible.
As if the views of Hells Canyon weren't enough, you'll find that just by spinning around you can view the landscapes of three of Idaho's surrounding states. Yes, you'll even be able to see all the way across the state of Idaho to the utterly gorgeous Bitterroot Mountains of Montana.
The trail to Heaven's Gate is the perfect adventure if you've been craving a taste of Idaho's wilderness. There's a lot to love about this hike: the peace and quiet, the remote location, and most importantly...the awe-inspiring views of four different states.
