Every hiking trail in Northern California has something specific to offer. Some offer stunning views. Some offer peace and tranquility. Others offer fascinating history. Well, it just so happens that this trail boasts a little bit of everything. Located in Lassen County, the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail follows an old railroad bed and even passes through an abandoned train tunnel. Treat yourself to a hike that has everything you could ever want in an outdoor adventure!
Located near Susanville, the Bizz Johnson Recreation Trail is a one-of-a-kind adventure that you'll definitely want to take. Not only does this trail boast a diversity of beautiful landscapes but it actually leads you through several bridges, trestles, and train tunnels as well.
The trail can be found just east of Lassen Volcanic National Park. At a whopping 25 miles, this trail is long . However, you're welcome to try as much or as little of the trail as you'd like. It's open to hikers, bicyclists, and even horseback riders.
The rail-trail connects Westwood to Susanville and follows along the route of the old Fernley and Lassen Railroad Line. You'll come across all kinds of diverse terrain as the trail winds through Susan River Canyon, including grasslands, woodlands, and even high desert.
The trail crosses the river a total of 12 times on historic bridges and trestles. These are quaint but meaningful reminders of the region's railroad and logging days of the past. The Susan River is a highlight of the trail and you'll find many people fishing along it for rainbow or brown trout.
You'll also be treated to stunning views of mountains in the distance along with towering basalt columns along the canyon's walls. The trail does a great job of taking you far away from civilization and leading you into the tranquility of the Northern California backcountry.
You'll once again be reminded of the trail's rich history when you approach the old railroad tunnels. Be sure to bring flashlights or headlamps because you will be shrouded in darkness. However, there's something incredibly invigorating about plunging into the pitch black depths of the tunnel.
The railway was originally established in 1914 for transporting logs and milled lumber to and from the Westwood Mill. The line was discontinued in 1978 and it was then that Congressman Harold "Bizz" Johnson led the movement to turn the corridor into a hiking trail. Thanks to Bizz, this rail-trail can be enjoyed to the fullest!
The trail is quite popular in the summertime but not everybody wants to complete the entire 25 miles. Don't fear! The Bureau of Land Management actually provides weekend shuttle service which picks up hikers in Susanville and stops at three separate locations along the trail. This way you can pick and choose which sections you'd like to explore.
Have you hiked through this abandoned train tunnel before? The scenery from this trail is truly amazing. These tunnels may not be as massive as the iconic Donner Tunnels , but they are fascinating nonetheless.
