As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
Sometimes an outdoor vacation with family and friends needs an upgrade from a campsite or cabin. Sometimes, a big part of the vacation is the accommodations you choose. That’s why these houseboat vacations just might be the upgrade you need for a great holiday in the sun.
If you are interested in spending your next West Virginia vacation on a houseboat, there is only one option available to you, aside from buying your own. Your houseboat vacation will occur at Sutton Lake, a 1,440 acre lake in central West Virginia. Sutton Lake is 14 miles long with 44 miles of shoreline.
On the western end of this long and winding lake, which borders the northern side of the Elk River Wildlife Management Area, you will find a large marina.
The Sutton Lake Marina can handle all your needs. They have everything from food to marine supplies. They also have rentals for all types of boats, from kayaks to jet skis.
They also have three houseboats for rent. All three are identical, fitted to sleep eight, with a maximum occupancy of 10. There are 59 feet long and 14 feet wide.
The boats have a covered upper deck with a bar, and a slide that slopes along the back to the boat's edge, dropping you right in the water.
Inside you will find a fully equipped kitchen, dining room, four queen-size beds, a propane BBQ grill with propane provided, two bathrooms, plus central heat and air conditioning. It truly is a modern house on the water.
Aside from the 500 square foot sundeck on the roof, you will also find two lower decks on either end of the boat an ideal place to relax and enjoy the view of the lake.
If the idea of a houseboat appeals to you, but you are not confident of your navigation skills with such a large vehicle, not to worry - there will be a mandatory orientation provided by one of the marina's dock masters. They will instruct you on the safe operation of the boat, providing as little or as much training as you require, and you will be accompanied on a test ride to ensure proper operation procedures are understood and practiced.
After that, you can travel around the lake at your own pace, and dock anywhere. Part of your orientation will include proper docking procedures and how to safely anchor your boat to trees. Alternatively, you can choose to anchor in one spot and use a smaller boat, such as a pontoon, to navigate the lake.
The boats are also great for fishing. Sutton Lake is filled with bass and crappie. The lake even hosts more than 60 bass tournaments over the course of a single year. The houseboat can be rented for a period anywhere between three days up to an entire week.
If a vacation on the water sounds like a good idea, adding a houseboat to the plan will make it a great one. Sutton Lake Marina is located at 1734 Bee Run Rd. in Sutton.
