Who doesn’t love a relaxing scenic drive on a beautiful day? Buffalo happens to be surrounded by some spectacular rural roads perfect for taking a quick break from reality. Try one of these routes when you’re ready to get away from it all, at least for a few hours.
It may be part of the longest federal highway in America, but if you merge onto Route 20 outside of Buffalo, you'll see a lot of rural beauty and small agriculture towns. Route 20 cuts through the state east to west, and it includes a few surprising gems, like life-size dinosaur statues.
This north-south highway stretches for about 20 miles, passing through the village of Hamburg. The origins of the highway date back to 1930, and it's a nice, peaceful drive.

You can take Route 219 from West Seneca all the way to Virginia, but you don't have to go that far to see the stunning rural beauty that surrounds it. Whether it's a summer Sunday drive or a fall foliage tour you take, you'll love this stretch of highway.

Quite a bit of Route 18 parallels the shores of Lake Ontario, and the peaceful farmland you'll see along the way is pleasant and charming.
The Niagara Scenic Parkway is one of the most unorthodox parkways in the state. It runs along the Niagara River, and while it's currently undergoing a lot of changes, most of it is still drivable (and remarkably underutilized).
State Route 240 is a state highway in name only - it's really more of a series of small county roads. From Buffalo, just take I-190 S for about 10 miles, then enjoy the relaxing country drive.
Boston State Road (also known as Route 391) stretches from Hamburg to Boston. It's a short drive, but it's nice and scenic (and rarely crowded).
