North Dakota has a handful of natural springs, but only one of them is as special as this one. The hidden mineral spring in one of the state’s forests has the only natural waterfall in all of the state. Take a stunning scenic trail through the trees and discover why this place might just be your new favorite summer destination:
Head out to the Sheyenne State Forest near Fort Ransom, North Dakota to discover this amazing spring.
The Sheyenne State Forest is located in the Sheyenne River Valley and is full of beautiful trees around the meandering river. To reach the specific trailhead you need to find the mineral spring, click here for a map and click here for its location on Google for directions.
As you take the hike through the forest, you'll experience almost magical surroundings and views.
The trail is an extra section of the North Country Scenic Trail that runs all the way from New York and ends at Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota. It is off of this trail that you can reach the special spring trail that was added in 2006.
This waterfall comes from an underground mineral spring that gently cascades off a lush, green ledge onto the forest floor below. There is no other place in North Dakota where you will find a natural waterfall, so this spring is definitely special and deserves to be more well known.
Check out this totally serene and relaxing video of the waterfall by Kevin R. Tengesdal. Can you just imagine spending time here listening to that sound? It’s like a paradise!
What an awesome place! While you won’t find any other natural waterfalls in North Dakota, you can find a very cool manmade waterfall in another forest at the Turtle River State Park. Read more about it right here!
