Antiques are physical connections to the past. They are what remains of bygone eras that will never return. This store takes it a step further, though, as the building itself is also an antique.
O'Hurley's General Store has been standing for well over a century in historic Sheperdstown, the oldest town in West Virginia. So it is fitting that an antique store such as O'Hurley's would be a popular destination.
Inside, you can find all manner of antiquities, and a few other things as well, such as handmade furniture, which can be found in the back room. But there is so much to see here, both big and small.
The shop has several rooms to search through, with interesting and unique products packed in each. In the first room, you will notice a wood-burning stove made of steel that you might think does not actually get used, but it does. On winter days, you will find it burning bright. Sometimes they will even serve you apple cider as you enter.
It is also very likely you will encounter Murphy, the store cat. In the winter, he will probably be curled up in a ball next to the stove.
As you browse the store you will come across many things, such as clocks, pocket watches, cutlery, mandrels, wagons, sleds, books, fire tools, jewelry, cast iron cookware, dry goods, and musical instruments. With an eclectic mix of products like that, it is very likely you will find something to catch your eye. And if you visit the store on a Thursday, you will be treated to live music in the back room.
You will even find many antique and vintage toys, such as this Raggedy Ann and Andy set.
The store even has holiday themed products, such as this display on Halloween, complete with candles, napkins, books and decorations.
Christmas is also a big time for the store and they sell a range of Christmas themed products. Like the Halloween theme, O'Hurleys holiday products have a more traditional style, highlighted by antiquated themes of simplicity and country charm.
Walking through the shop is really like a walk in the past - one that you will want to take over and over again. O'Hurley's General Store is located at 205 E. Washington St. in Shepherd Town. It is open Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday-Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
