Once summer’s warm weather settles in, lots of New Yorkers begin to search for waterfront destinations that can provide us with the opportunity to cool off. Made a National Historic Landmark back in 1987, one of New York’s small towns is home to a family-friendly amusement park that’s been around for generations and generations. A place that may look familiar to you even if you’ve never actually been here, Playland Amusement Park is where many scenes from the 1988 film Big were shot! Still a favorite place for our residents to visit, find out why we’ll never grow tired of visiting this one beachfront destination.
Situated right on the oceanfront, Playland amusement park in the town of Rye has been open since 1928.
One of the only remaining wooden rollercoasters that are still in operation in America, the Dragon Coaster has been around since 1930 and was one of the park's first major rides.
As you venture through the park, you'll find that many of the same rides that were installed in the late 1920s and early 1930s are still here and in operation today.
The park has a dedicated area for younger visitors called Kiddy Playland, where you'll find tons of different rides that are suitable for small children.
Kiddy Playland also features a DJ who plays music twice a day, a party celebration twice a day in honor of Playland's 90th birthday, and Funky Fairy Tales that are also hosted twice a day in this area of the park!
While you won't find Zoltar in the same spot along the boardwalk where he was in the film, he's still hiding in the park waiting to tell you your fortune.
One of the most wonderful perks about the park is that it has its has places where you can cool off, like the oceanfront pool that has spectacular views of the Long Island Sound.
For a small extra fee that ranges from $3 to 6 dollars, you can gain access to the park's iconic beach. Visitors of the beach can also rent chairs, umbrellas, and lockers while they're down by the water.
