You know that the best peaches come from Palisade and that the freshest of beef comes from northeast Colorado… but did you know that the Centennial State is also famous for one of the most iconic of summertime foods? If you didn’t, read on as we discover the small town that transforms into a watermelon wonderland each year:
Hiding out in southeast Colorado is that of Rocky Ford, which is deservingly nicknamed the "The Sweet Melon Capital of the World."
Once home to the Ute and Kiowa tribes, Rocky Ford was incorporated in 1887 as a place for farmers to come together and grow fresh produce.
Not much has changed in the last 100-some years, as Rocky Ford still boasts a strong agriculture scene dominated by some of the juiciest and most delicious cantaloupe and watermelon you will ever try.
While farmer's markets and roadside melon stands are not uncommon in Rocky Ford, there is even more watermelon goodness to go around at the annual Arkansas Valley Fair!
Arkansas Valley Fair will take place August 15-19, 2018, and will feature all of your fair favorites, as well as a special Watermelon Day on Saturday, August 18!
Free watermelon, seed spitting contests, AND a melon eating contest? I'll see you there!
