Ghosts and West Virginia go together like bread and butter. So many places are reputed to be haunted that a simple internet search will produces thousands of results on the subject. And among the top places said to be haunted is this closed insane asylum in Weston.
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum completed construction in 1881, but was open to the public by 1864. Though originally designed to hold only 250 patients, it held 2,400 in the 1950s, which led to poor conditions for the patients.
Thousands of people were treated there, and hundreds died there as well. Since closing in 1994, it has built a reputation for being very haunted by those poor souls that died in the asylum and never left the confines of its walls.
Over the years, visitors and the staff have reported unexplained phenomenon in the asylum, including unexplained voices, sounds and visible apparitions. It reputation for being haunted also gained national recognition when it became the subject of investigations by several TV shows, including Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters Academy, Ghost Adventures and Paranormal Challenge.
But you don't have to star in a TV show to explore the asylum yourself. All you need is a little money and a brave soul.
Each ghost hunt is an overnight experience, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. You can choose be a part of a public group hunt, exploring the main building, or a hunt that explores the Medical Center, Forensics building and Geriatrics building. You can also choose to book a private hunt for yourself and some friends.
