The Charles River Esplanade stretches along one side of the Charles River in Boston. This approximately three-mile leafy path is one of the best ways to see the glittering Boston skyline from all angles and get a dose of fresh air right in the city.
The river walk is full of unique surprises, including families of waddling geese, tucked-away benches that are perfect for reading, and explosions of colorful flowers.
The Esplanade is so much more than just a grassy path by the water. It’s home to many Boston landmarks such as the Hatch Memorial shell and historical monuments, as well as lots of opportunities for land and water recreation. Head to the docks to enjoy some time by the waves, get in shape at the Esplanade’s free outdoor gym area, perfect your serve at the public tennis courts, or grab a snack at the Charles River Bistro.
You can take this walk at your own pace. Plenty of people choose to head here for an early-morning run, but you’ll also encounter families with small tots ambling along at a leisurely rate. The river walk also includes three unique playgrounds catering to big and small kids.
When you reach the iconic Boston Hatch Shell, you can opt to cross a bridge over the road which will send you in the direction of Boston Common. This means you can go straight from the river walk to one of the city’s most beautiful public parks. You’ll also find public restrooms being the Hatch Shell near the Fielder Footbridge.
