This state park features a fort from 1774, reconstructed to commemorate the structure that served as a colonial refuge nearly 250 years ago.
Prickett's Fort State Park, located in Fairmont at the confluence of Prickett's Creek and Monongahela River, is a recreation of the original fort from 1774.
The fort served as a refuge for settlers from Native American war parties along Virginia's western frontier. Though cramped, settlers would remain for days or even weeks at the fort, depending on the threat level in the region.
In 1976, a recreation of the original fort was built by Prickett’s Fort Memorial Foundation to serve as a venue for historical reenactment.
The fort is reconstructed both on the outside and the inside. Reenactors recreate life in colonial Virginia through demonstrations in full period garb.
When you visit the fort, you will see demonstrations that include blacksmiths, spinners, weavers and various other artisans skilled in the crafts of our colonial ancestors. The fort also has a gun shop that has the only demonstrations of colonial gun manufacturing in West Virginia.
If you wish to learn more about our colonial past, this is a venue that should not be missed. Prickett's Fort State Park is located at 106 Overfort Lane in Fairmont.
