It doesn’t matter what year you were born — if you’re born and raised in Washington, certain dates will be etched into your memory, whether they’re from memory, a textbook, or word of mouth. These are a few of our most iconic moments.
On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted and changed the course of our history forever.
The Kingdome was once the site of Mariners games, Seahawks games, and a ton of other local events. It was demolished by implosion on March 26, 2000, but we now have Safeco Field and CenturyLink Field to enjoy.

Washingtonians remember this day because one of the seven astronauts killed, Richard F. Scobee, was from Cle Elum. We also remember February 1, 2003, when the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during reentry and claimed the life of former Spokane resident Michael P. Anderson.

That happened on July 28, 1996, leading to an ownership controversy and a battle between the Umatilla tribe and the government.
The Mariners won it again in 2000 and 2001 (and almost in 97), but no one who is True to the Blue will ever forget the first time it happened (and the epic celebrations that followed).

Washington has had plenty of earthquakes over the years (in fact, as we all know, we're due for a huge one eventually). But the quake on February 28, 2001 had a magnitude of 6.8 and was felt as far away as Eastern Washington, Idaho, and Oregon.
Or, perhaps, this is a day we won't quite be able to remember for some reason. Wink, wink.
