Who says you have to venture to a tropical island to have a super day at the beach? You don’t even have to leave the state of Connecticut as we have miles and miles of coastline to enjoy. We’ve put together a beach day road trip that you and the whole family are going to love. Not only are we taking in a few beaches and places to eat, but there are some fun surprises along the way.
This beach day road trip is just over an hour of driving time so you'll have plenty of time to visit each attraction. Grab your flip flops, a beach towel, and a pair of shades and let's get started.

1. Jacob's Beach, Guilford
Jacob's Beach in Guilford is the perfect start to our road trip. The kids will love this beach with a sandy shore and adjacent playground. There are also drinking fountains, outdoor showers, and a bathhouse to make your beach experience a little more comfortable. Enjoy splashing in the surf or soaking up some sun. There is a nominal daily fee for visitors.
2. Guilford Mooring, Guilford
The Guilford Mooring is a great waterside pit stop for lunch. Dine indoors or outside on the patio under an umbrella. You'll find a great selection of seafood, delicious burgers, and more. If you bring the kids, you'll be excited about the $5 kids menu for young diners.
3. Meigs Point Nature Center, Madison
Now that your belly is full, proceed on to Hammonasset Beach State Park to visit the newly renovated Meigs Point Nature Center. Enjoy the touch tank and other exhibits that kids and adults alike will find fascinating. While you are in the park, you might want to explore the beach, climb the boulders, or take a hike.
4. Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale, Madison
Just a few minutes away from Hammonasset Beach is an iconic shoreline destination. Grab a sweet ice cream cone or a hearty bowl of delicious clam chowder at Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale Restaurant. While you are there, indulge yourself by taking a turn on the carousel, your beach day road trip won't be complete without this nostalgic ride.
5. Mini Golf at Saybrook Point, Old Saybrook
Take a quick side trip down to Saybrook Point and test your skills on the green. This mini golf course is not too difficult and loads of fun. Adults love the $5 price point per game and kids love all the unique obstacles and decor.
6. Black Point Market, Niantic
This quaint store has been operating since 1928. It has a deli, fresh baked goods, but is also a charming spot to pick up a few beach souvenirs. Make sure you grab some of the incredible freshly made sandwiches here, you're going to want them for the picnic we have planned at your next stop.
7. Niantic Bay Boardwalk, Niantic
A day that begins at the beach should end at the beach. Now that you have your sandwiches from Black Point Market, settle down on the boardwalk and enjoy a picnic while experiencing the last hours of your road trip. Take one last dip, feel the sand between your toes again, and enjoy a stroll down this picturesque boardwalk.
