If you live in South Carolina then chances are good that you don’t know that directly across US-17 from the entrance to Myrtle Beach Mall there is a 500-acre spiritual oasis hidden in the trees. Or that by simply changing your course to a left turn (into the hidden oasis) from a right turn (into the mall) could be the moment that also changes your life.
But it's positively true. Literally across the street for the mall, the Meher Spiritual Center rests among 500 virgin acres, including one mile of beach on the Atlantic Coast.
What's more, it's been there since 1944. The spiritual retreat was created in the early 1940s under the guidance of Meher Baba, an Indian spiritual master who, in his lifetime, only established two such centers outside of India. (The other is in Australia).
The sacred site has been a spiritual retreat for those interested in rest, meditation and spiritual renewal since Meher himself traveled to the U.S. in 1952 to inaugurate the site.
Meher Baba (1894-1969) was an Indian spiritual master who, among other things, lived in silence from 1925 until his death in 1969. He communicated at first with an alphabet board, and later by hand signals interpreted by an assistant.
He visited the Myrtle Beach center three times in the 1950s and conducted interviews with individuals, families and groups in the Lagoon Cabin shown below.
Visitors to Meher Spiritual Center can enter the cabin for prayer, meditation and quietude.
The center's 500 acres remain exactly as they were from the beginning. It was one of Meher's "rules" regarding the facility: it must remain unchanged for eternity. The roads and the buildings within are kept as closely to their original state as possible.
The retreat has two lakes, several paths for walking, a boat house, a kitchen, library, main house and Baba's House, built specifically for his three visits to America.
Visitors who are interested in Meher Baba and want to learn more about Him are welcome. A tour is required for all new visitors to the center and must be arranged in advance.
Tours are free of charge and last approximately 90 minutes. To request a tour, call (843) 272-5777, seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
