There's A Monastery Hidden In Alabama And You'll Want To Visit

While driving through Alabama, you’ll come across several unique places. From drive-thru museums and cave restaurants, to one-of-a-kind homes and even a coon dog cemetery, the list of places you’ll encounter is endless. St. Bernard Abbey, which was established in 1891, is located in Cullman, Alabama. It's one of the state's true hidden gems.
The group of 36 monks that makes up the monastery community share the following things in life: prayer, work, housing, property, meals, recreation, and more.
The monks live according to the Rule of St. Benedict, which was written c. 530 A.D. They also come together at least five times a day for worship.
People of all ages and faiths are invited to visit St. Bernard Abbey. It's an experience everyone should have at least once.
Located on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey is Ave Maria Grotto, a four-acre park that features 125 miniature replicas of world famous religious structures. This unique park was designed by Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey.
The St. Bernard Abbey Retreat and Conference Center opened in 1981 and welcomes religious groups, in addition to Abbey guests, school groups, and more.
For those who wish to stay the night, the St. Bernard Retreat and Conference Center offers 46 rooms. Each room includes a pair of twin beds, a private bath, a telephone, and individual room temperature control. A limited number of private guestrooms are available.
