You often hear about a lot of people choosing New York as their destination for retirement, whether it’s to come back home after moving away or to try out the Northeast for their third act in life. It’s always nice to hear from actual New Yorkers where they suggest retiring to, but it’s even nicer to look at actual data that can point you in the right direction
1. Great Neck
A tiny village out on Long Island, Great Neck can be found right between Manhasset Bay and Little Neck Bay. Part of Nassau County, the village's high ratio of doctor's per 1,000 people was one of the main factors that lead Great Neck to be on the top of Smart Asset's list! Aside from having oceanfront views, the village of roughly 10,000 residents also offers plenty of outdoor activities and peaceful parks, great restaurants and pieces of history nearby.
2. New Hyde Park
Another location in Nassau County to make the list, the small village of New Hyde Park only has about 10,000 residents. Life in this island village includes being just a few miles away from local museums, the Roosevelt Field mall, Old Westbury Gardens and the Belmont Race Track. New Hyde Park had a high number of recreation centers and doctor’s offices per 1,000 people, leading it to the top of the list taking the second spot.
3. Fairport
Heading out to a different region of New York, the village of Fairport can be found less than a half-hour outside of Rochester. Home to roughly 5,000 residents, Fairport is most famously known for its rich history along the Erie Canal. In the past, this small village has been recognized for being one of the best places to live, but what made it rank so high on the Smart Assets list was the high number of recreation centers and retirement centers per 1,000 residents! Much higher than any of the other places to make their list when it came to these two categories, we can't help but agree with the notion that Fairport is a wonderful place to retire.
4. Manhasset
We aren't done with Long Island just yet! Taking the fourth spot on the list, the small hamlet of Manhasset is home to roughly 8,000 residents.
5. Webster
Playing a game of tag for the top spots, Western New York's Monroe County is hiding one of our favorite towns - Webster. Home to tasty restaurants and just a quick drive away from Lake Ontario, Webster was another location that also had much higher rankings when it came to recreation centers and retirement centers per 1,000 residents.
6. Ballston Spa
Tucked away up in Saratoga County, the village of Ballston Spa is just fifteen minutes south of the city of Saratoga Springs. Near all the area’s popular attractions like SPAC and well-known local restaurants, the village itself has more to offer than meets the eye. From quirky places to pop in like the National Bottle Museum to delicious places to eat like Iron Roost or The Whistling Kettle, there’s plenty of reasons to feel assured in picking this place as your retirement destination.
7. Hartsdale
Part of Westchester County, the small hamlet of Hartsdale is a unique place to retire. Putting you in the middle of the Hudson River and our state border, Hartsdale is actually home to America's very first pet cemetery. Random but interesting, right? In Hartsdale, you'll be a quick drive away from a variety of attractions, and according to Smart Asset, you also won't be too far from a doctor's office if you need one.
8. Goshen
The village of Goshen may sound like a familiar place to you because recently it was announced that this destination would soon be home to New York's very own Legoland. But don't let a new fun park scare you off from thinking that this isn't a great place to retire, because you'd be wrong for doing that! Goshen had one of the highest rankings for doctor's offices per 1,000 residents and is home to just 5,000 residents. Part of Orange County, this village is near some of our favorite mountains and state parks and makes for a wonderful place to live.
9. Huntington
Part of Suffolk County, the town of Huntington actually includes over 203,000 New York residents! Within the large town, you'll find famous attractions like Oheka Castle, Caumsett State Park, and the Heckscher Museum of Art, all while living right along the waterfront. Out of all the places that made the top ten, Huntington's high ratio of retirement centers and doctor's offices to residents resulted in it making this list.
10. Warwick
Nestled in right along our state border, the town of Warwick has a population of over 30,000 residents and can be found down in Orange County. Giving you the luxury of having both New York and New Jersey right at your fingertips, this town made its way into the top ten with its high ratios of doctor's offices and recreation centers to residents.
