One of the biggest attractions of a tropical vacation is the stunningly clear waters that surround lush equatorial islands. Instead of booking a flight to Brazil or the Maldives Islands, you can always make a trip to Wyoming. Here, you’ll find an enchanting glacial lake that’s among the clearest in the world.
When the list of the clearest waters in the world was compiled, Wyoming's own Jenny Lake made the top 10.
Located near the Tetons in Grand Teton National Park, it's a lake that was formed 12,000 years ago when glaciers carved massive rocks into what is known today as Cascade Canyon.
Jenny Lake is named for the wife of an English hunting guide who led the survey party that explored the Grand Teton/Yellowstone area in the late 1800s.
The rock and regolith left in the glaciers' wake formed the bowl that Jenny Lake sits in.
The lake's waters are strikingly clear from practically every angle...
...and at any time of day.
Jenny Lake is one of only two lakes in Grand Teton National Park that allow motorboats. You can bring your own to take a leisurely cruise across the water or book passage on one of the scenic tours.
There are a number of hiking trails near the lake, too. There's even a fairly easy trail that loops around Jenny Lake, giving hikers a glorious 360-degree view of the pristine water.
Researchers studied the water quality of Jenny Lake in 2005, along with the other bodies of water in Grand Teton National Park. They found the waters in those lakes to be astonishingly pure, unblemished and unaffected by water or air pollution.
Surrounded by majestic mountains and unspoiled nature, crystal-clear Jenny Lake is truly a Wyoming treasure.
Have you swum in the crystalline waters of Jenny Lake? What other Wyoming lakes are sparkling-clear?
If you plan on visiting Jenny Lake this year, make time to also see another unique Wyoming lake that’s like no other in the world , and it’s nearby.
