Texas boasts 95 state parks, and each one offers something special. While they’re all pretty amazing, there’s one state park near Austin that really stands out from the rest. Check out McKinney Falls State Park.
McKinney Falls State Park is one of the most beautiful in all of Texas.
It's located just 10 minutes south of downtown Austin.
The park was named for Thomas McKinney, who built his homestead here next to Onion Creek back in 1852.
Thomas McKinney was one of the first state senators in Texas. His two-story home was built of limestone, and the property also included a gristmill and dam. McKinney died in 1873, and the James Wood Smith owned the property for 100 years before donating it to the state. Look for the ruins of McKinney's homestead, which are still located on park property.
Onion Creek is a beautiful, dynamic creek that circles most of the park.
The babbling, gurgling sound of the creek is your constant companion while you're here.
In the spring, you'll find fields of vibrant wildflowers.
To see wildflowers, you'll want to visit soon.
Explore the park by taking the 2.8 mile Onion Creek Trail.
This hike is considered moderately difficult, but it's well worth your time just for the views alone.
You might also explore the Rock Shelter Trail - a short, .7-mile-long loop trail that takes you to a rock formation that was used as a shelter by Native Americans.
Keep an eye out for wildlife, including armadillos. Did you know that this funny-looking creature's name means "little armored one?"
You might also see snakes, squirrels, raccoons, birds and white-tailed deer.
When the weather's warm, you'll want to take a dip in the swimming hole to cool off.
Don't forget your sunscreen!
During your visit, make sure to stop and enjoy this picturesque place.
You'll often find peace and quiet in this little park, especially if you can visit during the weekday.
Not ready to leave after a day of fun-filled activity? No worries - you can stay overnight in one of 81 campsites.
Every campsite has electricity and water, a picnic table, lantern post and fire pit with grill. The campground offers restrooms with showers.
