Texas boasts 95 state parks, and each one offers something special. While they’re all pretty amazing, there’s one state park near Austin that really stands out from the rest. Check out McKinney Falls State Park.

McKinney Falls State Park is one of the most beautiful in all of Texas.

It's located just 10 minutes south of downtown Austin.
The park was named for Thomas McKinney, who built his homestead here next to Onion Creek back in 1852.

Thomas McKinney was one of the first state senators in Texas. His two-story home was built of limestone, and the property also included a gristmill and dam. McKinney died in 1873, and the James Wood Smith owned the property for 100 years before donating it to the state. Look for the ruins of McKinney's homestead, which are still located on park property.
Onion Creek is a beautiful, dynamic creek that circles most of the park.

The babbling, gurgling sound of the creek is your constant companion while you're here.
In the spring, you'll find fields of vibrant wildflowers.

Explore the park by taking the 2.8 mile Onion Creek Trail.
