It’s hard to find an old general store these days. In fact, we previously listed a handful of them here and they continue to dwindle in the Old Line State. We recommend visiting the ones that are left, and that especially includes the following general store turned eatery. Check out this charming spot that has transformed into a delicious place to eat, while still retaining its history and character.
Barbely's Family Restaurant is located in Newark, which isn't too terribly far from Ocean City.
The property was purchased by the Barbely family in the 1950s, used for trade and serving lunch to local workers.
In 2006, the general store began its transformation into a restaurant and the rest as they say, is history.
The little details are full of charm, from the cozy seating on the front porch...
...to the dining area, with classic wood floors and antique chairs.
When it comes to the food, you can't go wrong. The menu is full of filling classics that will remind you of your grandmother's cooking. Crispy and juicy fried chicken, anyone?
If you're really craving flavor, try the oyster fritters. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.
End your meal with a homemade pie of massive proportions.
No matter which flavor you try, it's sure to be fluffy, flavorful, and addicting.
If you're someone who enjoys a bit of history and classic homemade cooking, then Barbely's Family Restaurant is worth a visit. Trust us, the drive is worth it.
