Today, the easiest way to get across the Mississippi River is by one of the many bridges that span across its waters. However, what do you do when the bridge to cross the river is over an hour away? Luckily, there are still a few ferries operating on the Mississippi River and it’s still a great way to get you and your car across the river.
If you're looking for a ferry boat that can take you from Missouri to Kentucky, there is only one option. The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is actually the only ferry operating on the Mississippi that can shuttle you and your car between the two states.
The ferry operates seven days a week. The first trip from Kentucky to Missouri ships off at 7 a.m. On the Missouri side, the first ferry trip is at 7:30 a.m. The last trip to Missouri is at 6:15 p.m. and the last ride to Kentucky happens at 6:30 p.m.
Taking the ferry is a super unique experience. All you have to do is drive your car onto the platform and park! The professional ferry operators will do the rest while you sit back and enjoy the ride.
It takes less than 30 minutes to cross the river by ferry. If you miss the boat, simply press the button near the loading site and wait for the boat to return.
Crossing the river by ferry is truly one of the most unique experiences you can find in Missouri. This mode of transportation is becoming less prevalent across the nation, so take the trip while you can! Prices for the trip vary by vehicle size, but for an average sedan, the trip will cost you $14.
You can find the ferry on the Missouri side at State Hwy A, East Prairie. For information about the ferry status, check out their Facebook page for the most up-to-date information.
