Boston – and Cambridge – keep creeping up the ranks of bike-friendly places. It’s easy to understand why that’s the case if you’ve ever explored any of the area’s bike trails. When you want to take a relaxing ride in Boston or its surrounding suburbs, options abound. However, if it’s soothing scenery you want, then look no further than these seven beautiful bike trails:
Technically, this is called the Paul Dudley White Bike Path but no matter how you refer to it, the views over the Charles make this a journey to remember. Stretching 13.6 miles along both sides of the river, this path weaves through Watertown, Cambridge, and Boston. Exercise caution around areas of roadwork – and there always seems to be roadwork – but otherwise, let your stress float away on the adjacent river.
This tree-lined route is lovely in all seasons, but never more so than in fall. It passes through Lexington, Arlington, and Cambridge. As part of the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame, this 10.5-mile long rail trail belongs on every biker’s bucket list.

This long, thin park stretches for 4.1 miles and its trails make this a good spot for biking. As an added bonus, it’s easy to extend your ride because the park links to the Arborway and the Emerald Necklace. You can also pause and take advantage of other sports amenities that line the route, like the basketball or tennis courts.

Bike paths line the Mystic River in Medford and Somerville, providing a pleasant setting for shorter rides. The Lower Mystic River Loop is just shy of three miles and takes you along both sides of the river.
Although there are gaps along the Harborwalk, this is still a great bike path that spans a total of 43 miles. The stretch from the JFK Library to Marine park affords both city and water views.
This is technically another section of the HarborWalk. Although only 2.5 miles in length, cyclists who take this bike path are treated to both wooded and river views. Venturing along this route is a relaxing and surprisingly tranquil experience.
