Milwaukeeans are very easy-going people, but we stay happy because of our amazing city and the things within it. Milwaukee culture is unlike anything else, and we’re home to the best of the best! These ten amazing things might not be so ordinary, but we would never go without!
1. Leon's.
Milwaukeean’s are crazy for frozen custard, and Leon’s is a must-have. We have quite a few classic custard shops to choose from, but this southside spot is essential.
2. Fried fish.
Many people go out on Fridays to dance the night away, and we do too... but we do it at a local fish fry. No Friday is complete without a fish dinner and polka dancing with fellow Milwaukeeans — it's the highlight of our week, every week , no exceptions. Bring on the coleslaw and rye bread, too!
3. Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Yes, other beer exists. No, we do not want it (unless it's from a Milwaukee craft brewery, of course!) There’s nothing better than a classic.
4. Culver's.
The most beloved fast-food restaurant in the Midwest is Culver's. It's the most convenient stop for all of your Wisconsin favorites, such as cheese curds, frozen custard, and the famous butter burger. Nothing hits the spot quite like Culver's does.
5. A great lake.
There’s simply nothing quite like lake living. It makes our weather more calm and provides a beautiful backdrop for our afternoon stroll. Plus, how else would we know which direction that we’re heading than to or from "the lake?"
6. Summerfest.
Milwaukee is known as the "City of Festivals," and while some locals might complain about Summerfest, we all secretly look forward to it every year. No Milwaukeean could do without having the world’s larget music festival right in their backyard.
7. A light to tell us the weather.
The Milwaukee Gas Light building is a beacon that shines high above the city, letting us know when the weather is changing! We’ll never stop using this little song…
"When the flame is red, it's warm weather ahead!
When the flame is gold, watch out for cold!
When the flame is blue, there's no change in view!
When there's a flickering flame, expect snow or rain!"
8. Rocky Horror Picture Show.
At the east sides famous Oriental Theatre, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been shown every second Saturday at midnight since January of 1978. It’s a tradition and a U.S. record.
9. The Fonz.
We love The Fonz so much that we have a bronze statue of him on our riverwalk. He’s practically our neighbor!
10. Alice Cooper.
Alice Cooper might not be a Milwaukeean, but he’s made his love for Milwaukee very well known. He famously talked about our wonderful city in Wayne's World , and the 2016 Milwaukee Film Fest even featured a short on the rockstars love for MKE. We consider him an honorary Milwaukeean, and welcome him anytime.
