If you’re a cave enthusiast or a history enthusiast (or both), you’ll definitely want to check out this amazing cave hiding near Fallon, Nevada. Aptly named Hidden Cave, this archaeological treasure has preserved some truly incredible artifacts from the past. It’s by far one of the most history-rich and fascinating caves you can explore in Nevada today. If you’re looking for an adventure that you’re bound to remember for years to come, you’ll want to plan a trip here soon.
Hidden Cave can be found at Grimes Point Archaeological Area near Fallon. The cave is a true hidden treasure. Not only is the cave itself stunning, but it's what you'll find inside that makes a trip here such an exciting adventure.
You'll find the area approximately 10 miles south of downtown Fallon. On the second and fourth Saturday of every month, the BLM holds free public tours of the cave. This is definitely an experience you shouldn't pass up.
Upon arriving at Grimes Point, you'll see that there is a huge field of boulders. From far away, they look pretty commonplace. But upon closer inspection you'll realize there's something truly extraordinary about this area.
The rocks are covered in ancient rock art...and there are hundreds of them. The rock art is just the first taste of the incredible things you're about to witness.
Hidden Cave certainly lives up to its name. The entrance is small and concealed. Although the site dates back to 4,000 to 2,000 years ago, it wasn't discovered until the 1930s. For thousands of years, nobody had any idea it was here.
You'll be in total awe as you enter the cave and see how otherworldly it looks. The cave is definitely cramped, which explains why experts believe that it wasn't used as a shelter by early Native Americans. Instead, the cave was used as what can best be described as a storage shed.
When archaeologists began excavating the cave, they discovered thousands upon thousands of artifacts stored inside. It seems that Hidden Cave was used as a place for early nomadic tribes to store their tools and gear.
The cave is by far one of the most archaeologically rich sites in the state, if not the entire country. Hidden Cave is an amazing insight into how early people lived and what kind of tools they used. This is something that every Nevadan should see at some point.
