Alabama is filled with lots of great history and has come a really long way since its early days. There are several places located throughout the state where you can still experience its history, including the nine places listed below. How many of these places have you visited?
1. Old Alabama Town - Montgomery
Old Alabama Town is an authentic 19th-century village that shows how people from different backgrounds lived and worked in the central region of Alabama. During your visit, you'll have the opportunity to view more than 50 structures from the 19th and early 20th century that have been beautifully restored. Old Alabama Town also features demonstrations that show how Alabamians lived during this time. Demonstrations include, but are certainly not limited to, cooking, pottery, blacksmithing, spinning and sewing.

2. Arab Historic Village - Arab
While visiting Arab Historic Village, you'll take a step back in time to the late 1800s to early 1900s and get a sense of what it was like to live in Arab during this time. You'll get to tour one-of-a-kind buildings that date from the 1880s to the 1930s and view a variety of artifacts, which will remind you that Alabama has come a really long way since its early days.

3. Burritt on the Mountain - Huntsville
Burritt on the Mountain is an open-air museum that's located on Round Top Mountain. It consists of six authentic 19th century homes, a blacksmith shop and a variety of outbuildings. Interpreters dressed in authentic period clothes will be available to give tours and demonstrate what it was like to live on an Alabama farm during the 1800s.

4. Town of Mooresville
Mooresville is a tiny town that's located in Limestone County, Alabama. It was incorporated in 1818, which makes it one of Alabama's oldest towns. It's actually older than the state of Alabama, which wasn't admitted to the Union until 1819. Mooresville's most notable landmark is its post office. It was built in 1840 and is the state's oldest operational post office. The entire town of Mooresville is also included on the National Register of Historic Places.
5. Fort Gaines - Dauphin Island
Fort Gaines, which was established in 1821, is a historic fort on Alabama's beautiful Dauphin Island. It's best known for its role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the American Civil War and features original war cannons, a blacksmith shop, kitchens, tunnels and more. Guided tours are available, and the guide will be dressed in a uniform that reflects the time period.

6. Alabama Constitution Village - Huntsville
Alabama Constitution Village is a living history museum that'll transport you back to 1819. During your visit, you'll get to tour a working village, which includes a cabinet maker's shop, a library, a post office, a law office and more. Alabama Constitution Village is part of the Earlyworks Museum Complex, in addition to the Huntsville Depot and EarlyWorks Children's History Museum.

7. Pioneer Museum of Alabama - Troy
The Pioneer Museum of Alabama features more than 22 historic structures and an expansive collection of 18,000 artifacts. A variety of demonstrations also take place such as woodworking, blacksmithing, dutch oven cooking and more.

8. Horseshoe Bend National Military Park - Daviston
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park is the site of the last battle of the Creek War, which occurred on March 27, 1814. While visiting this historic battle site, you'll have the opportunity to walk along a road with historical markers, take a look at real artifacts and watch a variety of living history demonstrations, which are conducted monthly.

9. First White House of the Confederacy - Montgomery
The First White House of the Confederacy, which was built in 1832-1835, was home to President Jefferson Davis and his family in 1861 when Montgomery was the Capital of the Confederacy. Many personal items of President Davis and his wife are inside the house on display, in addition to authentic furnishings from that specific time period. Admission is FREE!
