Life in Oklahoma might surprise newbies to our state. We have four distinct seasons (sometimes all in one day) and we fry most of our food, including our vegetables. We’re overly polite and interested in our neighbor’s lives (some would say nosy) but at the end of the day, we’re just simple people who enjoy good food and an easy-going life.

Here are 12 more things you might not know about life in Oklahoma.

1. It gets hot here. Like for real.

Some summers we are lucky and only hit triple digits a few times, while other years we can go weeks above 100 degrees. One thing is for sure, plan on spending your summers near the water.
2. Our lakes are our 'holy grail' in summer.

Because we have extremely hot and humid summers, we flock to our lakes and any body of water we can find. Our advice: buy a boat or make friends with someone who owns one.
3. You'll grow to love the thunderstorms.

If our storms scare you, just wait because you'll actually get an appreciation for their beauty. (Tornadoes are a different story.)
4. College football really is a BIG deal.

Like we've said before, pick a team and stick with it. You can't be a Sooner and a Cowboy and survive football season in Oklahoma.
5. Our turnpikes are expensive.

Roundtrip from Tulsa to Oklahoma City on the Turner Turnpike will cost you almost $10. And the costs just keep on rising.
6. We have an amazing food scene.

We have a growing craft beer scene and it's only getting better. There are many incredible microbreweries in the state that will win you over with their tasty beer.
8. Eastern and Western Oklahoma are polar opposites.

Not only is the topography completely different, but life on each side has a personality of its own. It's a little slower pace on the western side and more populated on the eastern side.
