This Hidden Trail In Vermont Leads To A Magnificent Archaeological Treasure

In one of the upper most corners of Vermont is a little island with a big history to discover. Isle La Motte is one of the Champlain Islands, and here you’ll find the The Goodsell Ridge Preserve and the Fisk Quarry Preserve, and they hold a wonderful archaeological treasure in VT. In all seasons, visitors can visit and discover some of these treasures on a nature walk and it’s fun for the whole family.
The Goodsell Ridge Preserve is 83 incredible acres of outdoor exploring.
There are signs and kiosks along the way making this a giant outdoor museum.
As you walk along the wonderful nature trails you'll also learn about the ancient Chazy Fossil Reef.
From Memorial Day to Columbus Day, there is even more for you to see:
Check out their Discovery Areas with signage which
identifies fossils etched in the reef rocks.
Also, take the incredible Walk Through Time Trail. This world class outdoor exhibit has roughly 80 colorful panels along along the 4,600 foot trail. You'll gain a scientific understanding of the 4.6 billion year history of life on Earth.
There is also a great museum and education center in a recently renovated Dairy Barn.
Before or after your visit to the Goodsell Ridge Preserve, a trip to the Fisk Quarry Preserve is an absolute must for even more trails of exploration.
Geoligists have been drawn here for years and the quarry is composed of the Chazy Fossil Reef.
The Fisk Quarry was once mined for limestone, and you can still see the drill holes in some of the walls.
Fossils from almost half a billion years ago can be seen in the walls of the quarry.
And even on the quarry floor!
What you'll find is nothing short of amazing!
Since the quarry was abandoned, it has become a wetland and is home to a many animals.
The Fisk Quarry Preserve is located on West Shore Road in Isle La Motte, and the Goodsell Ridge Preserve is located at 239 Quarry Road in Isle La Motte.
