Today, Katie writes, edits, and performs several other tasks for OnlyInYourState and has never been more passionate about a job before. Outside of work, you can likely find her curled up on with a hot cup of coffee, practicing yoga, baking, or exploring the beautiful Lone Star State (in particular, the vast and mystical West Texas desert).
Even if we won’t readily admit it, we all like weird stuff. We may not be interested in participating, but we’re more than happy to be nosy onlookers. Luckily, there’s an event in Texas designed for that specific purpose! The Weird Homes Tour began in Austin in 2013 and has since been named the best home tour in the city by Austin Monthly and one of the top 10 art events by the Austin Chronicle.
So, what is it exactly? It’s a tour that takes you to the weirdest homes in the city so you can marvel at and get a better understanding of how those who choose to be different live their lives. Keep scrolling to see some of the strangeness for yourself.
The 2018 tour will take place in Austin, Houston, Portland, Detroit, and NOLA. Evidently it’s a hit because it’s expanded nationwide in just a few years!
It’s self-paced, so you’ll drive to all the homes on the list and take your time gawking at everything from oddity and rare art collections, performance art, paintings, sculptures, and any other weird thing in-between that you can think of.
You can feel good about your ticket purchase, too, because the organization donates to local nonprofits in whatever city the tour is taking place in at that time. To read more about how Weird Homes Tour gives back, click here.
The strangeness isn’t limited to just the INSIDE of the homes, either. No, these owners are proud to be different and have no shame in flaunting it. You’ll see garages, lawn decorations, and even cars decked out in the wackiest ways possible.
The Austin tour takes place on April 21, so hurry up and get your tickets before they’re gone! Here’s a sneak peak of a few homes that will be included this year.
