Sometimes it feels like winter lasts half the year in New Hampshire. It would be easy to give into despair, lock yourself in doors, and hibernate like a bear, but we all know that won’t end well for any of us. Instead, here in New Hampshire we embrace winter, sometimes in pretty crazy ways. Some of our winter pastimes might seem straight up crazy to those from warmer climes – but to us, they’re just part of living our best lives. These hobbies are a far cry from the usual skiing and snowboarding – and you’d be hard-pressed to find them in most of the US!
1. Fatbiking
One of the hot new winter sports of the last few years, fatbiking (as the name suggests, the bikes are equipped with extremely wide tires) allows you to enjoy the fun of trail biking in the depths of winter. There are plenty of places to try it out in New Hampshire, including the Omni Mount Washington Resort.
2. Snow kiting
Zoom across frozen lakes in this amazing variation on skiing, in which a kite acts like a sail, propelling you at incredible speeds. Check it out at Hardwater Kiting in North Conway.
3. Dogsledding
There's nothing more magically wintery than dogsledding – it's straight out of a cihldren's story. If you want to experience this magic for yourself, check out Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel in Jefferson.
4. Winter ziplining
Sure, plenty of people zipline in the summer – but not many are brave enough to do it when it's absolutely frigid up in the trees. Try for yourself at Alpine Adventures in Lincoln.
5. Ice climbing
You have to be truly brave – and strong! – to attempt clambering up a wall of sheer ice, but plenty of New Hampshirites do it. Learn more at International Mountain Climbing School in North Conway.
6. Snowmobiling
This is perhaps the ultimate New Hampshire pastime – and if you haven't tried it yet, you've got to make sure you do before this winter ends. Try it at SledVentures in Lincoln!
If you prefer to cozy up indoors on these cold days, how about enjoying high tea instead ?
