Located 10 miles south of the Idaho-Nevada border is the small community of Jarbidge. Home to just a handful of people, it's considered the most remote town in the entire state.
You won't find any paved roads within a 20 mile radius of Jarbidge. The easiest way of accessing the town is by Elko County Road 748. The last portion of the route is unimproved and doesn't receive winter maintenance, so it can be a challenge to reach the town. But when you do, you'll see the journey was definitely worth it.
The community is one of the last of its kind. Like many other Nevada towns, Jarbidge was born from the Gold Rush in the early 20th century. Surprisingly, it doesn't look like the town has changed much from the time it was settled in 1909.
The few permanent residents who live in the town are in charge of keeping up the handful of businesses. The Outdoor Inn is the most popular (and only) lodging option. The inn feels extraordinarily authentic. It's the perfect place to eat, sleep, and socialize while you're in Jarbidge.
Be sure to stop for a drink at the equally rugged Red Dog Saloon. The food and drinks are no frills, but it's an awesome place to get acquainted with the locals. The Red Dog is a real rough and tumble saloon. It's not often you see places like this anymore.
People make the lonely trip out to this town for one particular reason: The Jarbidge Wilderness Area. Designated in 1965, the wilderness area encompasses nearly 65,000 acres of pristine natural beauty. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to this incredible area for adventure and serenity.
This was Nevada's very first designated wilderness area, and it also happens to be one of the state's most dramatic. It contains eight peaks that reach heights of over 10,000 feet and numerous canyons, streams, and rivers. With hundreds of hiking trails to choose from, you'll be overwhelmed by the recreational opportunities before you.
