Now that winter has fully set in here in Minnesota, it’s time to admit the inevitable: the cold and snow aren’t going anywhere for many more weeks, so we might as well get used to it. What better way to beat the winter blues than with a day of sledding? Minneapolis and the surrounding area offers great sledding hills that will take you out of your winter rut. Some are steep and fast, and some are gentle and slow – but all are tons of fun.
Who knew a golf course would have sledding hills? This one offers the best of both worlds. In winter, this hill is not for the faint of heart - it's one of the steepest in Northeast Minneapolis! Columbia Park offers hours of fun for thrill-seeking folks.
Address: 300 Central Avenue Northeast, Minneapolis
Theodore Wirth Park has both sledding and tubing hills. Take in all the laughter and excitement of sledding down the tenth fairway of the golf course, and make sure you visit the Chalet to warm up with a mug of hot chocolate.
Climbing this steep hill is totally worth the 20 seconds of gut-aching laughter as you channel your inner child and fly down the slope. Sledders flock to this hill for its stomach-churning steepness!
Here's another golf course that transforms into a winter wonderland once the snow starts to fall. The rolling hills make for excellent wintertime fun! Manitou Ridge offers two hills, one slower and smooth, the other faster with bumps. Whatever your preference, these hills are awesome!
Address: 3200 McKnight Road North, White Bear Lake
This park is the home of Sunset Hill, a popular winter destination for sledding. While here, check out the breathtaking sunsets and lovely Sweeney Lake.
Another steep sledding slope is located in beautiful Battle Creek Regional Park. In the winter, people gather in Battle Creek for several different winter activities, including sledding, outdoor skating rinks, and cross-country skiing. A warming house is located within the park if you need a reprieve from the cold.
Perhaps wild, thrill-seeking, gut churning sledding isn’t for you— and that’s ok! Margaret Park offers a more gentle slope and is great for children. They won't want to leave!
Address: 1109 Margaret Street, St. Paul
