Vermont is filled with colorful characters, which is one of the many reasons we love it here. Since each person is unique, most people will fall into a few of these categories. For example there may be a Flatlander-Hippie-Student, a Stockbroker-Snow Bird or a Woodchuck-Vermonter. The sky’s the limit!
Here are 15 types of people you’ll meet in Vermont. Which one(s) are you?
1. Vermonter.
A Vermonter is someone who was born and raised in Vermont, and the number of generations is a legitimate way to authenticate their validity. A fourth generation Vermonter: Impressive. Vermonter with Flatlander parents: Mug Blood.
2. Hippie.
Peace, Love and Hippie Vans. Hippies embrace peace and love as being essential in an increasingly globalized society, and they are oftentimes associated with non-violent anti-governmental groups. Don’t worry, they’re harmless.
3. Hipster.
Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. Very often seen wearing thick framed glasses that may or may not be real.
4. Flatlander.
Someone who wasn’t born in Vermont. Being called a "Flatlander" by a "Vermonter" is often meant as an insult. Yet sometimes, for example wearing high heels in the snow, they deserve it.
5. Athlete.
These are the ones who embrace the outdoor sporting activities that Vermont has to offer. They excel at most of the sports they try and are often avid skiers, bikers and runners.
6. Student.
Like it or not, they’re our future. And they’re also EVERYWHERE!
7. Phish Head.
A Phish Head, a subset of the Hippie, is a person who follows the Vermont Band Phish. "Phish Heads" are similar in concept to Phish as "Dead Heads" are to the Grateful Dead.
8. Yuppie.
A well-paid young middle-class professional who works/worked in a city and has a luxurious lifestyle. They ski (but not as well as the athletes) they appreciate good beer (but don’t brew it) and are usually Flatlanders.
9. Ski bum. Literally!
A person who works a job in exchange for benefits for example free ski passes or the coveted multi area season's pass as well as good deals on gear. They believe the best things in life are free and will usually be turning fresh tracks every morning the mountain is open.
10. Quebecers.
They may not stand out, but they are abundant. A Quebecer is someone who moved across the Canadian border and now lives in Vermont because… Well, who wouldn’t want to live in Vermont?
11. Snow bird.
A retiree, usually from Vermont, who lives in Florida for the winter but comes back to Vermont in the summer. Can’t say I blame them.
12. Stockbroker.
A regular Stockbroker is the classic definition: Someone who buys and sells securities on a stock exchange on behalf of clients. A Stockbroker in Vermont is someone who bought a large second home that they enjoy a couple of weeks out of the year.
13. Brewers.
These guys are laid back and chill. If you don’t brew your own beer, you certainly know someone who does. Both recreational and professional brewers are growing at a rapid rate.
14. Woodchucks.
These guys enjoy a simple life, they rely on the land, they would prefer to drive a car with 2 colors of paint and three types of tires. They are exceptionally handy and can fix just about anything with an old screwdriver and a roll of duct tape.
15. Farmers.
Honest and hardworking, Vermont farmers cultivate the land and give us the fresh food we love. Whether they are dairy farmers, vegetable, meat or organic, we need them and we love them.
