It’s home to the annual Rock City Shrimp Festival; it’s one of the oldest cities in our nation; and it’s a gateway to Georgia’s largest coastal barrier island, Cumberland Island. This town has a population of 17,755 but has the feel of a town with less than a couple thousand residents. What town am I talking about? Read below to see if you can figure it out.
1. Everything here is really unique and interesting.
Pictured here is another great building in this town: Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Chapel. As told by photographer Mr. Allen Forrest; "The Chapel began as a bank in 1840; however, the bank failed after seven years. Mrs. Marie Ponce Defour and her husband Lewis purchased the Chapel for their church as they had no formal place of worship. Worship services had previously been held above a store in the waterfront. Many of these Parishioners were Acadians who came from Novia Scotia seeking religious freedom. A bell tower was added to the building and the Chapel was utilized until 1957 when a new, much larger church was built on Dillingham Street."
