With more than 10 years of experience as a professional writer, Megan holds a degree in Mass Media from her home state of Minnesota. After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
On the Big Island’s Kohala Coast, far away from the resorts in Kailua-Kona and the lava flows in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, is a small town that’s big on charm. With a population of less than 2,000, Hawi is a funky little town that offers a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of life in a bigger city. And in this charming little town off the beaten path, you will find one of our all-time favorite restaurants — the Kohala Coffee Mill.
For the best pick-me-up in Hawi, head on over to Kohala Coffee Mill. Rumor has it that their mochas are among the best on the Big Island. But a caffeine fix isn’t the only thing you’ll find at this charming little eatery. You will also find mouthwatering breakfast and lunch menus, as well as a full selection of ice cream.
While the combination of coffee and ice cream under one roof might seem odd, if you think about it, it's actually a clever strategy. The shop is busy in the mornings serving breakfast and coffee for those who need a morning jump start, and that momentum carries through lunch and into the afternoon when patrons can choose between ice cream and coffee for an afternoon cup of joe. It's really a quintessential family-friendly establishment.
And while there's no doubt that the coffee is phenomenal, the ice cream is just as good. With a variety of intriguing flavors, from pineapple-coconut and chocolate macadamia nut to green tea and lychee, consider your sweet tooth satisfied.
We personally recommend visiting for breakfast and ordering the souffléd eggs with cheese, onion, tomato, pesto and/or bacon to accompany your cup of 100 percent Kona Coffee.
But o matter what time of day you visit, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your taste buds among their menu full of healthy and flavorful options.
In addition to mouthwatering food perfect for any meal, you'll also find a variety of merchandise for sale within the walls of this off the beaten path eatery with quirky decor and plenty of charm.
The Kohala Coffee Mill is located at 55-3412 Akoni Pule Highway B in Hawi, and is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
